*Glossary of terms:
Chuppah: a canopy beneath which Jewish marriage ceremonies are performed
Shul: a synagogue
Mezuzah: a parchment inscribed with religious texts and attached in a case to the doorpost of a Jewish house as a sign of faith.
Yeshiva: an Orthodox Jewish school.
Nu: A general word that calls for a reply. It can mean, “So?” “Huh?” “Well?” “What’s up?” or “Hello?”
Rebbe: a Yiddish word derived from the Hebrew word rabbi, which means "master, teacher, or mentor."
Goisha: a derogatory term that refers to something or someone who is not Jewish. Many people who grew up in very sheltered religious settlements feared non-Jews and non-Jewish ways of life.
Shidduch: a Jewish arranged marriage
Frum: devout or pious
Shamos: the candle used to light the other candles on a Hanukkah menorah
pe’ot: the Hebrew word for sidelocks or sidecurls
Minyan: the quorum of ten Jewish adults required for certain religious obligations.
Treif: the Yiddish word for any form of non-kosher food
Sukkah: a booth or hut roofed with branches, built against or near a house or synagogue and used during the Jewish festival of Sukkot as a temporary dining or living area.
Sukkot: a major Jewish festival held in the autumn (beginning on the 15th day of Tishri) to commemorate the sheltering of the Israelites in the wilderness.
