Byrom, with his gun aimed at Jael's back, looked toward the kitchen. “Jacks?”
“He's not here,” said Terrel. His voice sounding otherworldly.
“Who said that?” Byrom asked. His tone louder than intended.
“The devil.” Terrel gave the word plenty of menace in his tone. Watching Byrom become spooked by it.
Terrel then took the gun from Byrom's hand, breaking a couple of fingers in the process, and wrenching Byrom's wrist. Byrom clutched his wrist in pain when it was freed. Terrel kicked Byrom in the stomach hard and Byrom crashed against the staircase, back first. Terrel lifted Byrom up until his head was a couple of inches from the step behind it. Five blows to the face rocked Byrom, the sixth made Byrom go limp.
Lennon walked up to the front door. Completely oblivious. “Hey, I have everything set. Where are you guys?”
The third corrupt cop looked inside the screen door, seeing Byrom out like a light. The next instant, Lennon was pulled through the screen door with incredible force, taking it off its hinges. Jael couldn't believe what he witnessed. Some invisible force was beating the stuffing out of his last would-be kidnapper.
The smack sound of Lennon's head hitting the floor added to the racket that finally woke up Ms. Stern and had her racing down the steps.
“What in God's name happened here?” she cried as she saw the door.
“I don't know, mom.” Jael stood in the broken door way, looking at the screen door that was caved in and pulled inside the living room. “I think something...or someone saved me from these men.”
The bizarre story would carry around, becoming a popular rumor of an invisible force protecting the good people of Cleveland and dealing justice to those that would harm innocents.
Thus a new pulp hero was born.
