Project Death: Resurrection by Danielle Thamasa

I had to research before I went after the names on the list because it would be no help if I didn't know exactly how to recruit them. I had never thought that I would be doing anything like this. Before becoming the Angel of Death I had only believed that I would be an active Resurrector for the foreseeable future. Of course now I was finding that I enjoyed my job here. It was a level higher than Resurrection because there were more responsibilities. Not only could I heal when needed, but I also had to worry about Reaping souls and how best to do that. It tended to vary based on the situation, some people deserving of more compassion and a gentler death than others, though I thankfully had not needed to worry about any truly evil souls. But recruiting more people capable of Reaping into this lifestyle was a responsibility I had not really thought to ask about. Thanos had to have kept notes and paperwork on everything, just in case.

The position of Death had been created by Fate in order to ensure the Balance because of the corrupt nature of the Resurrectors; that much I had learned. So there had to have been a point when it was necessary for Thanos to create the Angel of Death and that meant that he would have needed to learn the specifics of how to do it. That knowledge and those duties were just a part of who he was so I knew it would only take a little searching to find what I needed.

Of course after finding out about the recruitment process I would also need to know more about the people to be brought into this calling. That meant I would need to go down into the Records to get all of the files I needed. Thanos' records were much more extensive than anything the Resurrectors had. He was far too particular about all of this stuff, feeling the need to keep records for those who had been the Angel of Death and those who had been on his list of potentials but who had never been chosen. Plus, I remember him telling me that there was a series of books that just listed the names of everyone Reaped each year. Apparently it rarely happened that there would be a clerical error made by Fate and the records helped to clear up any issues. Now it was a good thing that Thanos was so prepared for anything and everything because it would hopefully make this all easier for me.

Without even waiting I took the list with me to the Records to search for what I was after. The room was expansive, filled with shelves and shelves of files but I also knew the room would expand to accommodate more files as needed. I could remember Thanos giving me a tour of the facility and telling me how it all worked. The files were organized in a manner that made it fairly easy to find anything.

What I needed would be hiding in the back corner on a smaller shelf. It was the one that held information for potential Angels of Death. I walked back past the other rows of shelves to the back and found what I was looking for. The shelf was perfectly clean, without the dust that seemed to be on everything else.

Unfortunately instead of finding ten files, I only saw six. This was not what I was hoping for but still it was better than nothing. I needed to move quickly. Just the thought of Thanos being locked up with the Leaders made my stomach churn. Samuel was a ruthless man and I was actually beginning to see that. I needed to get Thanos out of there before anything happened to him. The fear I felt wrapped around my heart and squeezed as if trying to stop me where I stood. If anything happened to Thanos, the Resurrectors would have to deal with my wrath, which I knew could be extremely dangerous.

Three young women and two men were what I found in the files. It turned out the sixth file was my own, a fact that amused me, though I would have to check it out later. Despite wanting to know what Thanos had jotted down about me in my file, I had more important matters to worry about. First I needed to find out how to actually turn them so they could perform their new duties, and then I had to go out and bring them here.

I had a feeling it was going to be a very long night.
